Expatriate Coverage

An expatriate refers to a person residing in a region outside of their country of legal residence. These individuals are often fairly high-ranked in an organization and are usually charged with very important international assignments. Generally, expatriates are the most common type of “exported” employee; however, some companies also employ two other types of individuals:

  • Inpatriates – an alternative to expatriation, an inpatriate is defined as transferring an international manager to the organization’s domestic market or home environment.
  • Third Country Nationals – persons who represent neither the contracting organization nor the host country or area of operations.
What is the purpose of Expatriate Coverage?
Regardless of their country of origin and the location of their assignment, expatriates, inpatriates, and third country nationals all require a highly specialized type of health coverage. The purpose of this coverage is to ensure that these individuals receive the same quality of health care as they would obtain at home, with additional features that address the unique risks associated with any worldwide location. This protection is especially important to employees that are stationed in areas that are unstable or volatile, or who are in regions where the medical facilities are not to the same standard as at home.
